Lost And Found Three (this post actually took some effort)

I recently got into my head that I ought to do something about all of my digital music that doesn't have an artist tag. Over the years, I've had several knackered hard drives, so it's pretty amazing that anything is intact. I'm convinced that the ipod did some interesting stuff to some of the files. I found Smog's Forgotten Foundation among the mystery files. I also found some Big Black bootlegs, which are pretty great. The "auto-tag" function in Winamp is pretty good, but it doesn't help for King Crimson bootlegs, or some other unidentifiable cool stuff.

It did help out with a lot of strange stuff that I don't remember stealing/downloading--most of it seems to be relatively far-out stuff. I didn't bother to double-check to make sure that the software was right, though. Check it out (and let me know if I've got something wrong):
  • Cassandra Wilson - Easy Rider (7:03) -- I dig the glissando bass. One of these songs doesn't belong (this one). It's nice to have some bluesy chill-out music in the middle of the set, right?

Lost And Found One

I've been going through milk crates of cassettes and long-lost folders of jpgs. It's amazing to me that I hang on to some stuff like I do. When the FBI confiscates my PC, I'll have some explaining to do.

I'd Better Learn How To Play.

Seriously. This was recently released, and the samples are damn good. If one took the time to learn it, a real bass player would become completely optional (and someone else to pay). Take a look at the "Tutorial Video" if you want to see something really scary.

I recently learned how to do the dead notes on "Stealth" in a reliable manner. I was having problems with harmonics all over the place. I should've figured that out to bother Yessit about before he handed the reins over--I think that he mostly just played by accident half the time, though. I'm now playing a lot more notes on that song in particular.

It's Working!

Finally got this crap functional. I also managed to move all of my old posts (going back to April 2002).

Sweet.

I Am A Guitar Zero (insert parenthetical here)

Everyone that knows me, fucking knows that I'm not much of a home video game player, like men my age are supposed to be, according to my mother. I do love pinball games (I might just school your ass on solid state tables on a good night--I need to drag Fuckin' Ronny up to Lyons), and certain arcade games of antiquity (I heart puzzle games) , but my Playstation 2 is virtually unused (that perspective shit makes me ill). I was totally addicted to DOOM in college, though (almost flunked out because of that).

I recently discovered an open source (whoot!), PC version of Guitar Hero, called Frets On Fire.

I suck at this shit, really. I've been attempted to rock out with my cock out, and it's just not happening. I can sort of pull off Danzig's Mother on the "supaeasy" setting, but I still can't do it right (this is fucking embarassing, because that's probably the easiest song ever written). As it turns out, the video game version is way way way more difficult than actually playing the fuckin' song.

I suck; I'm a banjo nobody.

This game sounds like it's more my speed (I just discovered it). Weed, yo. I think that I'll give it a shot. It sounds like games that I played back in the day on the BBS.

My Connection Is All Fucked Up

There must be water in the wires or something (or, they're busy in Paris). Help me Reverend Deadeye, you're my only hope.

For the time being, anyway. Now I can actually do stuff.

Such A Luddite Right About Now

Holly jeebus, my little droogies. I'm agonizing about this computer situation. An hour for that last post is fucking painful, reallyreallyreally. I'm actually considering a laptop (gasp), so that I get out of the barn and deal with (fucking) people. The Girl says that laptops are good if you don't work at home--surely that would cut down on inebriated blogging. I think that Heller did this a few years back. He's so much cooler than I am. Technology-inspired lifestyle-change is a horrifying thing to me (it's like buying your first vibrator or something).

This antique machine is not going to do it, though. I'd really like to get a sweet sound card so that I can record some multi-track demos. I'm not certain how many inputs I would require--I'm thinking that somewhere between 10 and 16 would be required for the OC; a similar number would be required for the BLC. Andrew sez that he can do it with 8 in. I need advice from digital music people. Surely some massive storage is in order and big memory. Two questions remain:
  • how robust should the processor be?
  • the OS?
In Luddite-related catnews (tm): my Nitwit is now terrorized by the space-heater. I had to rescue her from it this very afternoon. She's experienced this piece of equipment for years...so this is yet another catmystery (tm).

Happy Hanukkah.

Just When I Thought That Linux Man Was Dead

My Windows 2K machine ate shit. It's a decade old. Now is the time to replace it. I think that I backed up the data appropriately, but I'm troubled about that.

The stop gap was doing a quick linux build on spare machine that I should've gotten rid of. This one was a 'gift' from my brother when he got his laptop. I think that I'm running an antiquated version of Redhat (which doesn't exist in the desktop world anymore). It's a little painful for the time being (still haven't coerced the sound card to function), but at least I can check my news, weather, ebay, blog (without spell-check) and email.

I can also learn all about important things like Kentucky.
