Recently, Ross found some of the "Adolph sessions", which were recorded November 7, 2004 in the big, bad studio at the Auraria campus by the one and only Chris Adolph. I can sort of make out the phantasmal backing vocals on the chorus. Those singers were Marie Litton, Joe Sampson, and "some dude from the DU recording school that was there helping Chris". This is the only existing track, which is complete with studio chatter during the solo (I'll bet that the talk back microphone was left on by accident--this seems to happen a lot). The others aren't complete, and Chris has misplaced the DAT tapes, so they never will be. It sounds pretty nice; I've got a couple of gripes, but no big ones. I'm glad that these recordings surfaced. That wicked Abby Road console sure did sound nice.

I do love a good lost and found tapes story. Got me to thinking on some liminal space where long past performances must go. They're still out there somewhere, right? Somehow, they must, I think.
Thanks for sharing!
I hope that they're out there, or at least the good ones are.
I'd almost forgotten about the four of us going down to the campus on that cold evening--Ross opened up some long-forgotten file cabinets in my mind:
We mostly played great together at that point--everything was tracked together except the vocals. The acoustic bass to DI just wasn't happenin', though. The bass was overdubbed with that damn SWR cabinet (which lost my trust when I discovered that the speaker terminals were of the cheesy screw-on variety). It was very cold that night, but not snowing. Gann Matthews was in the building working on something, and I chatted with him for a few minutes.
actually, jason's guitar solo was overdubbed, my vocals were live (!) and the backing vocals were overdubbed.
there was also a little bottle of jim beam that somebody with the last name of thunderwizard brought. (although it may well have been the chief that smuggled it in).

There was also a copy of Shakey that Jason was reading. I didn't recall that the lead vocal was live.
I remember that we were each in own zip code to minimize bleed in the giant room.
I guess that "everything" doesn't count lead guitars or backing vocals. Hee Hee.
actually....the vocals WERE overdubbed. don't know why i thought otherwise.
too much of the skull bong can impair memory...it's cool, though.
we can all use a good memory jog every once in a while. one has to keep in mind that was during the "you're hard core" period with the cloud--it's amazing that we can remember anything from that time.
man, we really could tell some tales if we wanted to. many of 'em would embarrass me, though.
