Two Movies.

¡Vámonos con Pancho Villa! was really great, although it should have been fixed before they transferred it to DVD. It got the terror of early machine gun warfare across very well--better than most WWI movies. The "censored in Mexico" alternate ending was the most unbelievable part, though--I'm glad that we checked out the special features.

The Tomb was probably the worst movie I've ever seen. I did like the minimal set, but I was ready to be done with it after the first bit of lame double-exposure visual effects. Horrible. Don't look for it on DVD.

For a completely bitchin' WWI movie, check out the German classic Westfront 1918, if you can find it. bleak as hell. it makes me wonder if it wasn't partly based on Ernst Junger's "Storm of Steel", which is a completely awesome war novel I count among my favorites, next to "A Rumor of War" (Phillip Caputo).

German movies usually don't do it for me, but I'm willing to give 'em a shot for a WWI carnage fest.

My great grandfather was an artillery dude back in the day, so I'm quite into the horror that is trench warfare. Seriously, could it be any worse??

My point in describing the Mexican movie, was that technology had beat tactics, and the illustration of it was Mexican peon volunteers being mowed down like grass with a lawnmower (horrible writting).
